FAQs for 14-Day Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania Safari
Planning to combine Kenya’s Maasai Mara, Uganda’s gorilla forests and Tanzania’s Serengeti and Ngorongoro in one journey? These are the questions travellers ask most often, answered honestly so you can plan your trip and book with confidence.
What is the price of this safari and what does it cover?
The 14-Day Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania Safari starts from $6,900 per person sharing, but the net cost depends on your group size, the season you travel in, and your chosen level of accommodation. That starting price is based on mid-range accommodation and covers your Bwindi gorilla trekking permit, park and reserve entrance fees, private 4×4 safari transport with an experienced driver-guide, fuel, scheduled internal flights where included in the itinerary, meals and accommodation as listed, bottled drinking water, and government taxes. International flights to and from East Africa, visa fees, optional activities, extra nights before or after the safari, souvenirs, tips, and porter hire are not included. Your final quotation confirms exactly what applies to your chosen accommodation level and travel dates.
Can this 14-Day Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania Safari be customized?
Yes. The safari can be tailored around your travel dates, budget, interests, and preferred pace. You can add more nights in the Maasai Mara during the Great Migration season, extend your time in the Serengeti, include a Ngorongoro Crater descent, add chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, or finish with a beach extension in Zanzibar. Accommodation can also be upgraded from mid-range lodges and camps to luxury properties. Share your group size, preferred travel dates, and accommodation category, and we will prepare a tailored itinerary and quotation.
Which countries and parks does this safari visit?
This safari combines three East African countries: Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. In Kenya, the itinerary features the world-famous Maasai Mara National Reserve. In Uganda, it includes Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for mountain gorilla trekking, with wildlife and scenic experiences along the route. In Tanzania, it covers the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, two of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife destinations. The exact day-by-day route is confirmed in your final itinerary.
How long are the drives and flights on this safari?
Because the safari covers three countries, the itinerary uses a combination of scenic road transfers and regional flights to reduce unnecessary travel time. Road transfers within each country vary from around two to six hours, depending on the park, road conditions, traffic, and border or airport procedures. Longer cross-country sectors are normally handled by scheduled flights, such as connections between Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. Your driver-guide plans each day around game-viewing times, flight schedules, and comfort stops.
How does travel between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania work?
The safari is designed as one seamless East African journey, with border crossings or regional flights arranged according to the itinerary. Where you travel by road, your guide assists with border formalities; keep your passport, visa, and any required health documents in your hand luggage. Where flights are used, your team coordinates airport transfers and luggage requirements. Entry rules and flight schedules can change, so we confirm the latest requirements with you before departure.
What wildlife can I expect in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania?
In the Maasai Mara, you can expect lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and many antelope species. In Uganda, the highlight is the endangered mountain gorillas of Bwindi, along with forest birds, primates, and other wildlife depending on the route. In Tanzania, the Serengeti offers exceptional Big Five viewing and vast plains wildlife, while Ngorongoro Crater has a high concentration of animals, including black rhinos, lions, elephants, hippos, and flamingos on the crater lake. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but early morning and late afternoon game drives offer the best chances.
Will I see the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara?
The Great Migration is seasonal. Large herds of wildebeest and zebra are commonly in the Maasai Mara from roughly July to October, when they move between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara. River crossings are unpredictable and depend on rainfall, herd movement, and river conditions. If your travel dates fall outside this period, you can still enjoy outstanding resident wildlife viewing in the Mara, and the Serengeti offers excellent game viewing throughout the year.
How long will I spend with the mountain gorillas in Bwindi?
Your gorilla trekking briefing starts at 7:30am at the park headquarters, and the trek begins around 8:00am. Once the trackers locate your gorilla family, you are allowed one hour with them. Visitors are grouped in small numbers, with a maximum of eight people per gorilla family each day, which keeps the encounter calm and protects the animals. The time spent finding the family can range from one to six hours depending on where the gorillas moved overnight, so the overall trek can be shorter or longer than you expect.
Can I choose which gorilla family I trek?
Gorilla families are assigned by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers at the morning briefing rather than chosen in advance. Rangers consider the fitness levels and preferences of the group, so travellers who prefer a gentler hike can request an easier family, while those who want a longer trek can ask for a more distant one. Assignments depend on the day and on where each family is located. Mention any mobility or fitness concerns to your driver-guide early so they can raise them with the rangers.
Is there a minimum age for gorilla trekking?
Yes. Visitors must be at least 15 years old to track mountain gorillas in Uganda, and this rule is strictly enforced by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Younger children cannot join the trek, even with a parent. If you are travelling as a family, tell us the ages of everyone in your group when booking so we can recommend suitable alternative activities and accommodation arrangements for younger travellers.
What rules should I follow near the gorillas?
Follow your ranger’s instructions at all times. Keep the distance the rangers specify, speak quietly, and avoid sudden movements. Do not use flash photography, and never touch or feed the gorillas. Do not eat, drink, or smoke near them. If a gorilla comes close, stay calm and let it pass. Mountain gorillas are vulnerable to human illnesses, so rangers may require visitors to wear a face mask during the encounter and to follow the hygiene guidance given at the briefing.
What happens if I feel sick before the gorilla trek?
Tell your driver-guide and park staff straight away if you have a cold, flu symptoms, diarrhoea, or any other contagious illness. Mountain gorillas can catch human diseases, so rangers may stop visitors who are unwell from trekking. Whether you can reschedule or receive a refund depends on the permit conditions set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. We recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical issues and trip interruption, and we encourage you to rest and stay hydrated before the trek.
Am I guaranteed to see the gorillas and the Big Five?
Sightings of habituated gorilla families are highly likely because trackers follow the animals daily and guide you to them. However, gorillas are wild animals, so no operator can offer an absolute guarantee. Big Five sightings in the Maasai Mara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro are also very likely, but they remain dependent on animal movement, weather, and luck. Our team secures your gorilla permit in advance and plans the itinerary to give you the best practical chance of successful wildlife encounters.
How difficult is the gorilla trek in Bwindi?
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi can be moderately challenging because the forest is steep, humid, and sometimes muddy. The trek may last from one to six hours before you reach the gorilla family, depending on their location that day. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, gardening gloves, insect repellent, rain gear, and a daypack are recommended. Porters are available at an additional fee and can carry your bag while also supporting local communities around the park.
Do I need visas for Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania?
Entry requirements depend on your nationality, so check the current rules for all three countries before you travel. Because this trip visits Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, you must be able to enter each country on your route. Some travellers may qualify for the East Africa Tourist Visa, but this does not automatically cover every routing or every country, so we confirm the correct visa plan for your itinerary. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months and has enough blank pages for entry stamps. Ask your doctor about recommended vaccinations and any yellow fever certificate requirements.
What accommodation is used on this safari?
You can choose from mid-range and luxury lodges or tented camps at each destination. The $6,900 starting price is based on carefully selected mid-range accommodation, while luxury upgrades are available subject to availability. Your final quotation lists the confirmed properties before you pay, and lodges may change if they are fully booked for your travel dates. We always match the accommodation standard to your budget and preferred safari style.
Is the Batwa cultural experience worth adding?
Yes, if you would like to balance wildlife viewing with cultural immersion. The Batwa community experience near Bwindi shares stories, songs, dance, and traditional forest knowledge. It can usually be added on the evening after your gorilla trek without requiring an extra day. The activity is optional and not included in the starting safari price, so let us know if you would like it added and we will include it in your quotation.
Should I tip my driver-guide, rangers, and porters?
Tips are not included in the safari price, but they are a customary way to thank the people who look after you. Many travellers tip their driver-guide at the end of the trip and give separate tips to rangers, trackers, and porters after the gorilla trek. Porter hire is optional and carries its own fee, and it also supports families living around Bwindi. There is no fixed amount, so tip according to the service you receive and what feels comfortable.
What should I do about travel insurance and money?
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical care, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, and interruption across all three countries. Carry some US dollars in recent, undamaged notes, and bring a card for lodge extras where accepted. Local currency in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania is useful for small purchases such as souvenirs and tips, and small denominations make tipping easier. Avoid packing single-use plastic bags, as Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have restrictions on plastic bags and officials may confiscate them at the airport.
How do I book this safari and what happens next?
Send us your preferred travel dates, number of travellers, and accommodation level. We first check gorilla permit availability, park reservations, internal flight availability, and lodge availability, then prepare a detailed quotation with your itinerary, inclusions, and total cost. Once you approve the itinerary and agree the payment terms, we purchase your gorilla permit and confirm the lodge, transport, and flight reservations. Because gorilla permits are limited, we recommend booking at least four to six months ahead, and up to ten months ahead for the busy December to February and June to September periods.
