Things to Know Before Booking a Uganda Safari: Your Complete Planning Guide
A Uganda safari is about much more than spotting animals from a vehicle. You can sit quietly with endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, follow chimpanzees through Kibale Forest, watch golden monkeys tumble through the bamboo of Mgahinga, search for lions on the savannah, and climb some of Africa’s most dramatic mountains. You can also paddle through the rapids of the River Nile, spend time with the Batwa and Karamojong communities, and enjoy birdwatching that ranks among the best in East Africa.
Before you book, it helps to know what each activity involves, what permits cost, who can take part, how demanding the treks are, what the weather will be like and what to bring. At Iconic Africa Safaris, we put this guide together to help you plan with confidence.
1. Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Habituation Permits

Gorilla trekking is the experience most travellers come to Uganda for. It takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Once your group finds a habituated gorilla family, you spend up to one hour in their company.
If you want more time, gorilla habituation is offered in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi. You join researchers, trackers and rangers for up to four hours with a semi-habituated family, watching them settle into life around humans.
Gorilla permit prices from 1 January 2027
| Visitor category | Gorilla trekking (1 hour) | Gorilla habituation (4 hours) |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign non-residents | $800 | $1,800 |
| Foreign residents | $700 | $1,600 |
| Rest of Africa | $500 | $1,000 |
| East African citizens | UGX 300,000 | UGX 750,000 |
Trekking and habituation are two separate permits, so decide which experience you want before booking. Permits sell out early in busy months, so reserve yours well ahead of time. Also choose your trekking sector early, because accommodation and driving distances vary a lot between the different parts of Bwindi.
2. Chimpanzee Trekking and Habituation Permits

Chimpanzees are tracked mainly in Kibale National Park, which has a large population and a well-established trekking programme. You can also track them in the Kyambura Gorge of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
A standard trek gives you about one hour with a habituated community. Habituation extends this to as much as four hours, so you can watch the chimps feeding, grooming, playing and moving through the forest. Habituation takes place in Kibale.
Chimpanzee permit prices from January 2027
| Visitor category | Trekking (1 hour) | Habituation (4 hours) |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign non-residents | $300 | $400 |
| Foreign residents | $200 | $300 |
| Rest of Africa | $200 | $250 |
| East African citizens | UGX 180,000 | UGX 250,000 |
3. Golden Monkey Trekking and Habituation Permits

Golden monkeys live in the bamboo forests of the Virunga Mountains and can be tracked in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. They are bright, energetic and endlessly entertaining to watch. A standard trek lasts about an hour, while habituation allows a longer look at their social behaviour.
| Experience | Foreign non-resident | Foreign resident | Rest of Africa | EAC citizen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Golden monkey trekking | $60 | $50 | $50 | UGX 40,000 |
| Golden monkey habituation | $100 | $80 | $80 | UGX 100,000 |
These permits are separate from gorilla permits. Check whether park entrance fees are included in your quotation, and book early.
4. Other Wildlife and Adventure Experiences

Uganda has plenty to fill your itinerary beyond primates.
- Game drives: Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Kidepo Valley and Lake Mburo national parks are home to elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes and much more.
- Rwenzori hiking: The Rwenzori Mountains, known as the Mountains of the Moon, offer everything from short nature walks to demanding multi-day expeditions.
- Mount Sabyinyo: Climb this Virunga volcano through montane forest and bamboo. At the summit you stand where Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo meet.
- White-water rafting: Tackle the rapids of the Nile at Jinja, with calmer, scenic stretches in between.
- Birdwatching: Mabamba Swamp, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, Kibale and Murchison Falls are all rewarding spots for birders.
5. Hiking Requirements and Advice

Mountain hiking in Uganda takes real preparation. Rwenzori trips can mean several days at altitude, with cold nights, rain, slippery paths and steep climbs. Mount Sabyinyo is no easy walk either, with steep sections, ladders and muddy trails.
Before you set off:
- Wear waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support.
- Bring waterproof jackets, warm layers and spare socks.
- Carry plenty of water and energy snacks.
- Use trekking poles if they help you.
- Hire authorised guides and follow their instructions.
- Allow time to acclimatise on high-altitude routes.
- Be honest with your guide about your fitness and any limitations.
Don’t underestimate the mountains, even in the drier months.
6. What Is a Cultural Experience in Uganda?

A cultural experience is a chance to learn about the people of a region: their history, livelihoods, beliefs, music, food and daily life.
Around Bwindi and Mgahinga, the Batwa cultural experience introduces you to an Indigenous forest community. You learn about their traditional knowledge of the forest, medicinal plants, hunting practices, songs and stories.
In northeastern Uganda, the Karamojong experience offers a window into pastoralist life. You see traditional homesteads, learn about cattle keeping, and enjoy dances and crafts that reflect the community’s close bond with its livestock.

Approach both with respect and genuine curiosity, and choose community-led tourism so the benefits stay with local people.
7. Best Time for a Uganda Safari: Month by Month
You can visit Uganda all year, but the weather shapes what trekking and wildlife viewing are like.
| Month | What to expect |
|---|---|
| January | Generally dry; excellent for wildlife and trekking. |
| February | Warm and fairly dry; good for primates and game drives. |
| March | Rains start in some regions; fewer visitors and greener scenery. |
| April | Wet, with muddy forest trails and quiet parks. |
| May | Rainy in many areas; good for birdwatching, and discounted gorilla permits may apply. |
| June | Drier weather returns; excellent for gorillas and game viewing. |
| July | A popular dry-season month, so book permits early. |
| August | Good trekking and game viewing, with high demand. |
| September | Generally favourable, with occasional showers. |
| October | More rain, lush scenery and excellent birding. |
| November | Rainy in many areas; discounted gorilla permits may be available. |
| December | Conditions improve, and it’s a popular month for festive safaris. |
Weather differs between regions, and mountain forests can get rain even in the dry season.
8. How Difficult Is Primate Trekking?
The effort depends on the terrain, the weather and where the animals happen to be that day.
| Activity | Difficulty | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Gorilla trekking | Moderate to challenging | Steep forest trails, thick vegetation, uneven ground. |
| Gorilla habituation | Moderate to challenging | Longer time in the forest and possibly extended tracking. |
| Chimpanzee trekking | Moderate | Forest trails, fast-moving chimps and uneven terrain. |
| Chimpanzee habituation | Moderate to challenging | Longer forest exploration and observation. |
| Golden monkey trekking | Moderate | Bamboo forest, slopes and volcanic terrain. |
Gorillas and chimpanzees move around, so the time it takes to find them varies. Some treks last under an hour, others several hours. Tell us about your fitness level and any mobility concerns before you book. We also recommend hiring a porter, especially in Bwindi, where they carry your bag and give a steadying hand on tough sections.
9. What to Pack for a Uganda Safari
- Lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colours
- Waterproof hiking boots with good grip
- Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers for forest treks
- Waterproof jacket or rain poncho
- Gardening gloves for gripping vegetation on gorilla treks
- Insect repellent and sunscreen
- Wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
- Binoculars
- Camera with spare batteries and memory cards
- Reusable water bottle
- Small daypack
- Personal medication and a basic first-aid kit
- Warm clothing for mountain areas and early-morning game drives
- Face masks for primate trekking, as park authorities require
- Passport, travel documents and permit confirmations
Pack light, especially if you’ll take domestic flights, which often have strict luggage limits.
10. Age Requirements
If you’re travelling as a family, keep these minimum ages in mind.
| Activity | Minimum age |
|---|---|
| Mountain gorilla trekking | 15 years |
| Gorilla habituation | 15 years |
| Chimpanzee trekking | 12 years |
| Chimpanzee habituation | 12 years |
| Golden monkey trekking | 12 years |
| Golden monkey habituation | 12 years |
Younger children can still enjoy nature walks, cultural visits and many wildlife activities. For hiking, rafting and other adventures, age limits depend on the activity, the operator and safety conditions, so always check before booking.
