Akagera blends savannah plains, rolling hills and shimmering lakes into one rich environment for both birds and large mammals. Watch for the Grey Crowned Crane, African Fish Eagle, Black-headed Heron, Saddle-billed Stork and the brilliant Malachite Kingfisher. Beyond the birds, the park also shelters elephants, buffaloes, zebras, kob, rhinos, giraffes, lions and occasionally leopards.

  • Approximately 2 to 3 hours’ drive, plus afternoon game drive
  • Accommodation: Akagera Rhino Lodge
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3

Rise at 6:00 am for a hearty breakfast, then head into the southern reaches of Akagera. This lower section of the park features dense acacia thickets, thick grasslands and the scenic shores and swamps surrounding several beautiful lakes. Scan the treetops and waterways for sought-after bird species while watching for elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes and lions moving through the landscape.

In the afternoon, board a boat on Lake Ihema and look out for the extraordinary Shoebill Stork, one of Africa’s most legendary birds. The African Fish Eagle fills the air with its iconic call, and the Giant Kingfisher dives sharply along the shoreline. Also watch for Grey Crowned Cranes, Malachite Kingfishers, African Jacanas and Pink-backed Pelicans, alongside curious hippos and basking crocodiles.

Day 4

Birding from Southern Akagera to the Northern Section

Carrying a packed lunch, travel north from the southern section into the vast northern part of Akagera, a landscape known for its sweeping savannahs, open grasslands and important wetland zones.

This northern area attracts predators such as lions and hyenas, drawn here by the abundance of grazing animals. Shoebill sightings are never guaranteed, but the chance alone makes this northern excursion exciting and worthwhile.

  • Full day of travel and birding between the two sections of the park
  • Accommodation: Kalenge Tented Camp
  • Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner

Day 5

Full Day Game Drive in Kilala Plains

Kilala Plains, in the northern part of Akagera, stretches across a vast open grassland habitat renowned for its high concentration of birds, especially raptors and savannah species. Soaring overhead, look for the African Fish Eagle, Bateleur, Martial Eagle, Grasshopper Buzzard, Booted Eagle and several vultures, including the White-headed, Lappet-faced, Hooded and Rüppell’s Griffon.

On the ground, the Secretarybird, francolins, spurfowls and Red-capped Lark reward patient observers. Across the open plains, species such as the Lilac-breasted Roller, Long-crested Eagle, Senegal Lapwing, Wattled Lapwing and Sooty Chat add colour and variety. Spend time observing their social behaviour, listening to their calls and watching them swing between branches high above.

Later in the afternoon, step onto the thrilling canopy walkway, one of only a few in Africa, suspended high above the forest floor and offering a unique view of the treetops and the birdlife within them.

  • Morning chimpanzee trek; afternoon canopy walk
  • Accommodation: Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 9

The rare Grauer’s Rush Warbler specialises in this Albertine Rift habitat and draws birders from around the world, while the Albertine Owlet is frequently heard in the dense surrounding forest.

Hunting low over the open marshland, the African Marsh Harrier puts on a regular display. Along the trail edges, greenbuls and barbets appear with pleasing regularity, while various sunbirds and flycatchers fill the forest fringes with colour. Common wetland birds such as the Yellow-billed Duck, Winding Cisticola and Common Bulbul round out an exceptional day of birding.

Cormorants and darters dry their wings on rocky outcrops, and around the islands’ vegetation, Village Weavers, Holub’s Golden Weavers, sunbirds and bulbuls move through the foliage.

Out on the open water, Grey-headed Gulls and terns glide effortlessly, and along the shallows, Black-headed Herons, Cattle Egrets and Little Egrets patrol quietly. After birding, transfer north, about 2.5 to 3 hours, toward Volcanoes National Park for the next exciting chapter of your safari.

Trekking through dense vegetation and cool mountain air, you eventually come face to face with these magnificent gentle giants in their natural habitat.

Spend up to one hour observing them feed, play and rest among the bamboo and undergrowth. In the evening, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village to meet local communities, enjoy traditional dances and learn about Rwandan customs and heritage.

These lively, acrobatic creatures live almost exclusively in the bamboo forests of the Albertine Rift, flashing brilliant golden-orange patches as they leap energetically through the canopy. Spend around one hour watching them feed on bamboo shoots, groom one another and tumble through the undergrowth.

Afterwards, the birding continues across Volcanoes National Park, home to more than 200 recorded species. The Rwenzori Turaco dazzles with vivid crimson and blue plumage, while the Handsome Francolin and secretive Dusky Crimsonwing reward patient observers. FAQs for 15-Day Rwanda Gorillas, Chimps and Birding Safari

Planning a long Rwanda safari for mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and birds? These are the questions travellers ask most often, answered honestly so you can plan your trip and book with confidence.

What is the cost of the 15-Day Rwanda Gorillas, Chimps and Birding Safari?

The cost starts from $4,550 per person, but the final price depends on your group size, travel season, and chosen accommodation level. Travelling in a larger group usually lowers the per-person cost because the vehicle and driver-guide are shared, while peak months and lodge upgrades push it higher. Permit and park fees are built into the price, including the gorilla permit at about $1,500, the chimpanzee permit at about $250, the golden monkey permit at about $100, and Akagera entry at about $100 per person per day. Rates are set by the Rwanda Development Board and can change, so send us your dates and group size for an exact quotation.

What is included and not included in the 15-day safari price?

The price covers transport in a 4×4 safari vehicle with fuel and a driver-guide, meals and accommodation as listed in the itinerary, gorilla, chimpanzee and golden monkey trekking permits, the Akagera game drive and boat cruise, bottled drinking water, and government taxes. It does not cover international flights, accommodation before and after the trip, the optional Batwa cultural experience, souvenirs, tips, or porter hiring. We also recommend travel insurance. Your final quotation confirms the exact inclusions for your selected accommodation category.

How does the 15-day Rwanda itinerary flow from start to finish?

You begin in Kigali with birding at Nyandungu Wetland, then spend days two to six in Akagera National Park for game drives, a Lake Ihema boat cruise, and birding in the Kilala Plains. Days seven to ten are in Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee trekking, the canopy walk, and birding in Kamiranzovu Swamp. You then travel along Lake Kivu to Kibuye for island birding before heading to Volcanoes National Park for gorillas, golden monkeys, and the twin lakes. Day fifteen returns you to Kigali for your flight.

Where will I stay during the safari?

The itinerary uses Onomo Hotel in Kigali on arrival, Akagera Rhino Lodge and Kalenge Tented Camp in Akagera, Hotel Chez Lando in Kigali on the return leg, Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel near Nyungwe Forest, Delta Resort Hotel in Kibuye, and Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge near Volcanoes National Park. Meal plans range from half board to full board depending on the day. If you would like to upgrade or adjust any lodge, tell us your preference and we will confirm the options in your quotation, subject to availability.

How long will I spend with the gorillas, chimpanzees and golden monkeys?

Once the rangers locate the gorilla family, you are allowed up to one hour with them, in a group of no more than eight trekkers. Golden monkey tracking also allows around one hour with the troop. Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe follows park rules on viewing time once the group is found, and your ranger will explain this during the briefing. The time spent searching varies from day to day, so the overall trekking duration can differ depending on where the animals have moved.

Am I guaranteed to see gorillas, chimpanzees and rare birds?

These are wild animals, so sightings cannot be guaranteed absolutely. Habituated gorilla families and golden monkey troops are followed daily by trackers, which gives you a very good chance of an encounter. Chimpanzees in Nyungwe move quickly and can be harder to find, so patience helps. Birds such as the Shoebill Stork are never guaranteed, although Lake Ihema and the northern Akagera wetlands give you a genuine chance. Our guides plan each day to give you the best practical opportunity.

Is there a minimum age for gorilla, chimpanzee and golden monkey trekking?

Yes. Visitors must be at least 15 years old to track mountain gorillas in Rwanda. Chimpanzee and golden monkey tracking have their own age requirements set by the Rwanda Development Board, which can change. If you are travelling with teenagers or younger children, tell us everyone’s age before booking so we can confirm eligibility for each activity and suggest alternatives, such as extra birding or cultural visits, where necessary.

Do I have to start the safari on a fixed date?

No, but your start date is shaped by permit availability. In this itinerary, chimpanzee trekking falls on day eight, gorilla trekking on day twelve, and golden monkey trekking on day thirteen, so we need permits to be available on those exact dates. Send us your preferred arrival date and we will check permits first. If your dates are not available, we can suggest the nearest dates that keep the full route intact.

What rules should I follow near gorillas and chimpanzees?

Follow your ranger’s instructions throughout. Keep the minimum distance set by park authorities, which is about seven metres for gorillas, speak quietly, avoid flash photography, and never touch or feed the animals. Do not eat, drink, or smoke near them, and wear the face mask provided or required during the encounter. These primates are very vulnerable to human illnesses, so the health and hygiene rules explained during each briefing apply to everyone in the group.

What happens if I feel sick before a primate trek?

Tell your driver-guide and park staff straight away if you develop a cold, cough, flu symptoms, diarrhoea, or any other contagious illness. Gorillas and chimpanzees can catch human diseases, and park authorities may stop visitors who are unwell from joining the trek. Any refund or rescheduling depends on the permit conditions set by the Rwanda Development Board. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers medical issues and trip interruptions.

Can I hire a porter, and is it worth it?

Yes. Porters can carry your daypack, steady you on steep or muddy slopes, and make the trek far more comfortable, even if you are reasonably fit. Their work also provides income to families living near the park. Porter hiring is not included in the safari price, so you can arrange it at the park on trekking day or ask us to organise it in advance. Tips for porters are optional and are given directly to them.

Do I need a visa, and what health documents should I prepare?

Entry requirements depend on your nationality, so check the current visa rules with Rwanda’s immigration authorities before you travel. Your passport should be valid for at least six months. A yellow fever vaccination certificate may be requested depending on the countries you have visited, and we suggest speaking to your doctor or travel clinic about vaccinations and malaria prevention. Rwanda also bans plastic bags, so avoid packing them in your luggage.

How do I book this safari and confirm my permits?

Send us your preferred travel dates, number of travellers, accommodation preference, and any special interests through the quote form, by email, or on WhatsApp. We first check permit availability for your dates, then prepare a detailed quotation with the cost per person. Once you approve the itinerary and payment terms, we purchase the permits and make the lodge reservations on your behalf, which secures your trekking spots. Because permits are limited, booking several months ahead is strongly advised.
