Safari overview

Meet two gorilla families in two national parks, on two separate mornings, in the last mountain forests where these gentle giants still live.

This private four-day journey takes you from Entebbe to the misty hills of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to about half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, and then on to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, where three volcanoes of the Virunga range rise above the border with Rwanda and the DR Congo. You travel by 4×4 safari vehicle with your own driver-guide, so you set the pace, stop for photographs and keep the group size as small as you like.

On the second morning, a park ranger leads you into Bwindi to find a habituated gorilla family. On the third morning, you trek in Mgahinga to spend time with the Nyakagezi family, whose bamboo and montane forest setting is very different from the dense rainforest of Bwindi. Each time you reach the gorillas, you stay for one hour, close enough to watch the juveniles play and the silverback keep watch.

Choose the travel style that suits you. We can arrange this itinerary on a budget, mid-range or luxury basis, and every version is fully private.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1

Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your driver-guide meets you at Entebbe International Airport after you land, or at your hotel in Kampala, and briefs you on the days ahead. You then head south-west on the road to Kigezi, with a stop at the Equator for photographs and a coffee.

Continue through Masaka and Mbarara, stopping for lunch along the way. In the afternoon the road climbs into the green, terraced hills around Kabale, and you reach your lodge near Bwindi in the evening for dinner and an early night.

  • 8 to 9 hours’ drive
  • Budget: Gorilla Valley Lodge | Mid-Range: Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge | Luxury: Gorilla Leisure Lodge
  • Lunch and dinner

Day 2

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi and transfer to Kisoro

After an early breakfast, you meet your ranger-guide at the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla etiquette and are assigned a gorilla family. Trackers have already set out at first light to locate the group.

The trek can last from one to six hours depending on where the gorillas spent the night. The terrain is steep and often wet, so a porter, who is included, can carry your daypack and help you on the hardest slopes. When you find the family, you spend one hour observing and photographing them in their natural habitat.

Return to the lodge for a late lunch, then continue by road to the Kisoro area, close to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The short drive takes you through some of the most dramatic scenery in Uganda, with the Virunga volcanoes appearing on the horizon. Dinner and overnight are at your lodge.

  • 1 to 6 hours’ trek, plus 2 to 3 hours’ drive
  • Budget: Ikaze Cottages | Mid-Range: Ichumbi Hotel | Luxury: Mount Gahinga Lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch and dinner

Day 3

Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga and a free afternoon

After breakfast, you drive to the park headquarters of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for a briefing with your ranger-guide. Mgahinga is part of the Virunga Massif, and its bamboo slopes and open montane forest feel quite different from Bwindi.

You trek in search of the Nyakagezi gorilla family, the habituated group in the park. Treks here can last from two to six hours, and your porter is on hand to help on steep or muddy ground. Once you find the gorillas, you spend one hour with them, watching how they feed, rest and interact. Gorilla movements are not fixed, so family allocation depends on availability and on where the group is on the day.

Return to your lodge for lunch and a relaxed afternoon. If you have the energy, you can add a golden monkey trek or a Batwa cultural trail (optional, at extra cost). Dinner and overnight are at your lodge.

  • 2 to 6 hours’ trek
  • Budget: Ikaze Cottages | Mid-Range: Ichumbi Hotel | Luxury: Mount Gahinga Lodge
  • Breakfast, Lunch and dinner

Day 4

Return to Kampala and Entebbe

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast with views of the volcanoes, then begin the long drive back towards Kampala. Your driver-guide takes the scenic route through Kabale, Mbarara and Masaka, with time to stop at craft stalls, viewpoints and a roadside lunch spot.

You arrive in Kampala or Entebbe in the evening, where we drop you at your hotel or the airport for your onward flight. If you have a late flight, we plan the timing so that you are never rushed.

FAQs for 4-Day Bwindi and Mgahinga – Double Gorilla Trekking Safari

Planning to track mountain gorillas in two different national parks within four days? These are the questions travellers ask most often about the double gorilla trek, answered honestly so you can plan your trip and book with confidence.

What is included in the 4-Day Bwindi and Mgahinga Double Gorilla Trekking Safari?

The package includes a mountain gorilla trekking permit for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and a second gorilla trekking permit for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, return domestic flights between Entebbe and Kisoro, airport transfers, and private transport in a 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced driver-guide. It also covers three nights of accommodation, meals as listed in your itinerary, bottled drinking water, fuel, and porter service on trekking days. International flights, visas, travel insurance, tips, and personal expenses are not included. Your final quotation confirms the exact inclusions for your selected accommodation category.

What does “double gorilla trekking” mean?

Double gorilla trekking means tracking habituated mountain gorillas in two separate national parks on consecutive days. On this safari, you trek one gorilla family in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and a second family in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Each trek requires its own permit, and each park offers a different forest setting, terrain, and gorilla family. Mgahinga sits on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, while Bwindi is a dense, ancient rainforest, so the two experiences feel quite different.

How does the 4-day double gorilla itinerary work?

Day one begins with a domestic flight from Entebbe to Kisoro, followed by a transfer to your lodge near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. On day two, you attend the ranger briefing and track the gorilla family in Mgahinga, then travel to your lodge near Bwindi. Day three is dedicated to gorilla trekking in Bwindi, including a ranger briefing and one hour with a habituated gorilla family. On day four, you return to Kisoro airstrip and fly back to Entebbe for your onward journey or hotel transfer.

How long is the flight from Entebbe to Kisoro?

The scheduled domestic flight from Entebbe to Kisoro generally takes around one to one and a half hours, depending on the flight routing and operating conditions. After landing, your driver-guide meets you for the road transfer to your lodge near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The fly-in option saves considerable time compared with driving from Entebbe, which can take eight to ten hours or longer. Flight schedules, baggage allowances, and transfer arrangements should be confirmed before departure.

How do I get the two gorilla trekking permits?

Both permits should be secured well before your safari because gorilla trekking spaces are limited and availability depends on your travel dates. Each permit allows you to track one habituated mountain gorilla family in the relevant park, so you need one for Mgahinga and one for Bwindi. We check availability and arrange both permits as part of your booking. Because the two treks take place in different parks on consecutive days, confirming the permits early helps us coordinate your flights, accommodation, and transfers.

How fit do I need to be for two gorilla treks in a row?

Moderate fitness is helpful, as you will trek on two consecutive days. The difficulty depends on the terrain, weather, and the location of the gorilla family on the day. Gorilla trekking in both Mgahinga and Bwindi can take anywhere from one to several hours, and the trails can be steep, muddy, and slippery. Regular walking, stair climbing, and wearing your hiking boots before travelling can help you prepare. Let us know about any mobility concerns in advance so we can discuss suitable arrangements.

How long will I spend with the mountain gorillas?

Once your ranger-guides locate the gorilla family, you are allowed one hour with them in each park. You can observe their behaviour, watch juveniles play, and take photographs without flash while following the ranger’s instructions. The encounter takes place under park regulations designed to protect the gorillas and their habitat. The time spent searching for each family varies, so the overall trekking duration can differ from one day to another and between the two parks.

Is there a minimum age for gorilla trekking?

Yes. Visitors must generally be at least 15 years old to participate in mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda, and this applies in both Bwindi and Mgahinga. Younger children therefore cannot join either trek on this itinerary. If you are travelling as a family, tell us the ages of everyone in your group before booking so we can check eligibility and discuss alternative activities where necessary.

When is the best time for the double gorilla safari?

The drier months, usually June to September and December to February, are popular because trails are often firmer and trekking conditions can be more comfortable. However, Bwindi and Mgahinga are rainforest and mountain environments, so rain can fall at any time of year. The wetter months can bring muddy trails but also lush scenery and good opportunities for photography. Gorilla trekking operates throughout the year, subject to park conditions and permit availability. Book early if you have fixed travel dates, particularly during busy holiday periods.

What should I pack for the Bwindi and Mgahinga gorilla treks?

Pack waterproof hiking boots with good grip, long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, gardening or hiking gloves, a lightweight rain jacket, a hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a small daypack. A reusable water bottle, camera with spare batteries, personal medication, and a face mask for the gorilla encounters are also useful. Gaiters can help keep mud and insects away from your legs. Because this is a fly-in safari, check the airline’s baggage allowance before packing and use soft-sided luggage where required. Keep essential trekking items accessible for both trekking days.

Can I hire a porter during gorilla trekking?

Yes. Hiring a porter is a practical way to make your gorilla treks more comfortable, even if you are reasonably fit, especially when trekking on back-to-back days. Porters can carry your daypack, offer a steadying hand on difficult slopes, and help you manage muddy or slippery sections. Their work also provides income to people living near the national parks. Porter service is included in this safari package as outlined in the itinerary, but confirm the precise arrangement in your quotation. Additional tips are optional and can be given directly to your porter.

What rules should I follow near the gorillas?

Follow your ranger’s instructions throughout both treks. Maintain the distance specified by park authorities, speak quietly, avoid flash photography, and never touch or feed the gorillas. Do not eat, drink, or smoke close to the animals, and avoid sudden movements if one approaches. Mountain gorillas are vulnerable to human diseases, so visitors must follow the health, hygiene, and wildlife protection rules provided during each briefing.

What happens if I feel sick before gorilla trekking?

Tell your driver-guide and park staff if you develop a cold, flu symptoms, diarrhoea, or another potentially contagious illness before trekking. Mountain gorillas are susceptible to human diseases, and park authorities may prevent visitors who are unwell from joining the activity. Any refund or rescheduling will depend on the applicable permit conditions and Uganda Wildlife Authority policy. We recommend suitable travel insurance that covers medical issues and trip interruptions. Follow the ranger’s instructions about face masks and other health precautions during your gorilla encounters.

Am I guaranteed to see mountain gorillas in both parks?

Both experiences offer good opportunities to observe habituated gorillas in their natural habitats, but sightings cannot be guaranteed absolutely because these are wild animals. Trackers and ranger-guides help locate the families and guide visitors safely through the forest. The duration and difficulty of each trek depend on where the gorillas have moved and the prevailing conditions. Our team coordinates the itinerary and permits to give you the best practical chance of completing both treks, while respecting wildlife welfare and park regulations.

Can I fly into Kisoro instead of driving from Entebbe?

Yes. This itinerary is designed as a fly-in safari, using a domestic flight between Entebbe and Kisoro to reduce long road transfers. After landing, you travel by private 4×4 vehicle to your lodge near Mgahinga and later transfer to the Bwindi area for your second gorilla trek. Flights are subject to schedules, weather, and operational conditions, and baggage restrictions may apply. Confirm your international arrival and departure times with us before booking so that the domestic flights and transfers can be arranged appropriately.

What accommodation options are available for this safari?

You can choose from budget, mid-range, and luxury accommodation, depending on your comfort preferences and budget. Near Mgahinga, options may include Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp for a budget stay, Mutanda Lake Resort for a mid-range experience, or Mount Gahinga Lodge for a luxury option. Near Bwindi, options may include Gorilla Valley Lodge, Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, or Gorilla Leisure Lodge, depending on availability and the trekking sector. We confirm the selected lodges in your final quotation before you pay.

Can I customise the 4-day itinerary, and how do I book?

Yes. You can tailor the safari to your travel dates, preferred accommodation category, and flight arrangements, subject to permit and flight availability. The package is organised as a private experience with your own driver-guide and vehicle for ground transfers. Send us your preferred dates, number of travellers, and accommodation preference so we can check both gorilla permits and prepare a detailed quotation. Once you approve the itinerary and payment terms, we can proceed with the required reservations and coordinate the trip arrangements.
