Detailed itinerary

Day 1

Kigali Arrival, City Tour and Drive to Volcanoes National Park

Your driver-guide meets you at Kigali International Airport or your hotel and settles you into a comfortable 4×4 Land Cruiser. Before leaving the city, you stop for a meaningful city tour. First, you visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial to reflect quietly on Rwanda’s powerful history. Next, you head to Inema or Niyo Art Centre, where local artists display vibrant work that tells the story of modern Rwanda.

After the tour, your driver heads northeast toward Volcanoes National Park, roughly 2 to 3 hours away. Along the way, rolling green hills fill every window, building real excitement for the gorilla trek tomorrow. Arrive at your lodge, have dinner and rest ahead of an early start.

  • Kigali city tour; approximately 2 to 3 hours’ drive to Volcanoes National Park
  • Mid-Range: Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge | Luxury: Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge
  • Half board

Day 2

Gorilla Trekking and Optional Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village

An early start brings you to the park briefing point, where rangers assign your gorilla family and explain the trekking rules. Your guide then leads you uphill through bamboo zones and thick forest until the tracker team locates the gorillas.

Once the gorillas are found, you are allowed a full hour in their company. Watch silverbacks resting, juveniles wrestling playfully and mothers nursing their infants with quiet care. The trek can be physically demanding because the volcanic slopes are steep, muddy and uneven, at altitudes above 2,500 metres, so suitable hiking boots and a moderate level of fitness are important. Porters are available at an additional fee of USD 15 to 20.

In the afternoon, you may join an optional visit to the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where community members share traditional dance, storytelling, craft making and everyday village life. The visit directly supports local conservation efforts and can be arranged at an extra cost. Enjoy dinner and a second night near the park.

  • Trekking takes 1 to 5 hours round trip; optional cultural visit in the afternoon
  • Mid-Range: Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge | Luxury: Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge
  • Full board

Day 3

Scenic Drive to Lake Kivu

After breakfast, check out of your lodge and travel southwest through Rwanda’s famously beautiful landscape, where terraced hills, banana groves and small farming communities line the road all the way to Lake Kivu.

As you arrive, the lake stretches wide and calm before you, its blue waters resting against the volcanic hills. After checking in, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy: sit by the water, explore the grounds or simply breathe in the fresh lakeside air. Dinner and the night are at your lakeside hotel.

  • Scenic drive southwest; travel time varies with stops and road conditions
  • Luxury: Lake Kivu Serena Hotel
  • Full board

Day 4

Lake Activities and Return to Kigali

The final morning offers a relaxed half day of lake activities before you head back. Kayaking, boat trips and swimming are all popular choices, giving you one last taste of Kivu’s quiet beauty.

After soaking it all in, your driver-guide transfers you back to Kigali for your onward departure. Please allow a comfortable margin between your arrival in Kigali and your international flight, as travel time can vary with traffic and road conditions.

  • Half day of lake activities, then transfer to Kigali
  • No accommodation unless an extra night is requested
  • Half board

FAQs for 4-Day Rwanda Gorillas and Lake Kivu Beach

Planning a short gorilla trek in Rwanda followed by a relaxing stay on Lake Kivu? These are the questions travellers ask most often, answered honestly so you can plan your trip and book with confidence.

What is the price of this safari and what does it cover?

The 4-Day Rwanda Gorillas and Lake Kivu Beach safari starts from $2,650 per person. That price covers your mountain gorilla trekking permit, private 4×4 transport with an experienced driver-guide, fuel, meals and accommodation as listed in the itinerary, bottled drinking water, Lake Kivu activities, and government taxes. International flights, extra nights before or after the trip, tips, souvenirs, porter hire, and the optional Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village visit are not included. Your final quotation confirms exactly what applies to your chosen accommodation level.

How does the 4-day Rwanda gorilla and Lake Kivu itinerary work?

Day one begins at Kigali airport with a city tour that includes the Kigali Genocide Memorial and a local art centre, followed by the drive to Volcanoes National Park. Day two is for gorilla trekking, with an optional afternoon at the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village. On day three, you drive to Lake Kivu and spend the rest of the day relaxing by the water. Day four offers a half day of lake activities before your transfer back to Kigali for your onward journey.

How long are the drives between Kigali, Volcanoes National Park and Lake Kivu?

The drive from Kigali to the Volcanoes National Park area takes roughly two to three hours, depending on traffic and stops. The transfer from the park region to Lake Kivu is a scenic drive through terraced hills and farming villages, and it is usually shorter than the Kigali leg. On the final day, the road back to Kigali takes several hours, so we plan your lake activities for the morning. Your driver-guide times each leg around your flight schedule.

How long will I spend with the mountain gorillas?

Once the trackers locate your gorilla family, you are allowed one hour with them. Visitors are usually grouped in small numbers, with a maximum of eight people per gorilla family each day, which keeps the encounter calm and protects the animals. You can watch the silverback, mothers, and playful juveniles while taking photographs without flash. The time spent finding the family varies from day to day, so the overall trek can be shorter or longer than you expect.

Can I choose which gorilla family I trek?

Gorilla families are assigned by park rangers at the morning briefing rather than chosen in advance. Rangers consider the fitness levels and preferences of the group, so travellers who prefer a gentler hike can request an easier family and those who want a longer trek can ask for a more distant one. Assignments depend on the day and on where each family is located. Mention any mobility or fitness concerns to your driver-guide early so they can raise them with the rangers.

Is there a minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda?

Yes. Visitors must be at least 15 years old to track mountain gorillas in Rwanda, and this rule is strictly enforced by park authorities. Younger children cannot join the trek, even with a parent. If you are travelling as a family, tell us the ages of everyone in your group before booking so we can discuss alternative activities for younger members, such as time at the lodge or cultural experiences while the rest of the group trekks.

What rules should I follow near the gorillas?

Follow your ranger’s instructions at all times. Keep the distance the rangers specify, speak quietly, and avoid sudden movements. Do not use flash photography, and never touch or feed the gorillas. Do not eat, drink, or smoke near them. If a gorilla comes close, stay calm and let it pass. Gorillas are vulnerable to human illnesses, so visitors also follow hygiene and health guidance given during the briefing, including wearing a face mask when instructed.

What happens if I feel sick before the gorilla trek?

Tell your driver-guide and park staff straight away if you have a cold, flu symptoms, diarrhoea, or any other contagious illness. Mountain gorillas can catch human diseases, so rangers may stop visitors who are unwell from trekking. Whether you can reschedule or receive a refund depends on the permit conditions set by the Rwanda Development Board. We recommend travel insurance that covers medical issues and trip interruption, and we encourage you to rest and stay hydrated before your trek day.

Am I guaranteed to see the gorillas?

Sightings of habituated gorilla families are highly likely because trackers follow the animals daily and guide you to them. However, these are wild animals, so no operator can offer an absolute guarantee. The length and difficulty of your trek depend on where the family has moved overnight. Our team secures your permit in advance and plans the itinerary to give you the best practical chance of a successful and comfortable encounter.

Do I need a visa to travel to Rwanda?

Entry requirements depend on your nationality, so check the current rules before you travel. Many visitors can obtain a Rwandan visa online or on arrival at Kigali airport, and some nationalities are exempt. Travellers visiting more than one East African country may also qualify for a regional tourist visa. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months, and ask your doctor about recommended vaccinations and any yellow fever certificate requirements for your route. We can guide you through the process.

What can I do on Lake Kivu during the trip?

Lake Kivu is a calm, scenic lake surrounded by volcanic hills, which makes it ideal for unwinding after the gorilla trek. Popular activities include kayaking, boat trips, swimming, and simply relaxing on the lakeshore or in your lodge grounds. This itinerary schedules a half day of lake activities on the final morning before the transfer back to Kigali. Tell us in advance which activity you prefer so we can plan the timing and arrange equipment where needed.

Is the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village visit worth adding?

It is optional, and it is a good choice if you want to balance wildlife with culture. Community members share traditional dance, storytelling, craft making, and everyday village life, and the visit supports local conservation efforts. It usually fits into the afternoon after your gorilla trek, so you do not need extra days. The activity is not included in the starting price, so let us know if you want it added and we will include it in your quotation.

What accommodation is used on this safari?

Near Volcanoes National Park, mid-range guests stay at Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge and Ingagi Lodge, while luxury guests stay at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge. On Lake Kivu, the itinerary uses Lake Kivu Serena Hotel in the luxury category. Lodges are subject to availability at the time of booking, and we may suggest comparable alternatives if your first choice is full. Your final quotation lists the confirmed lodges before you pay, so you always know where you will sleep.

Should I tip my driver-guide, rangers, and porters?

Tips are not included in the safari price, but they are a customary way to thank the people who look after you. Many travellers tip their driver-guide at the end of the trip and give separate tips to park rangers, trackers, and porters after the gorilla trek. Porter hire is optional and carries its own fee, and it also supports families living around the park. There is no fixed amount, so tip according to the service you receive and what feels comfortable.

What should I do about travel insurance and money?

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical care, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, and interruption. Carry some US dollars in recent, undamaged notes, and bring a card for lodge extras where accepted. Local currency is useful for small purchases such as souvenirs and tips. Rwanda has banned single-use plastic bags, so do not pack them in your luggage, as officials may confiscate them at the airport.

How do I book this safari and what happens next?

Send us your preferred travel dates, number of travellers, and accommodation level. We first check gorilla permit availability, then prepare a detailed quotation with your lodges, inclusions, and total cost. Once you approve the itinerary and agree the payment terms, we purchase your permits and confirm the lodge and transport reservations. Because permits are limited, booking several months ahead is wise, especially for the dry seasons and holiday periods.
