Safari overview

Spend extended time with mountain gorillas during a habituation experience, then trek chimpanzees in Kibale Forest.

This private five-day Uganda safari combines the remarkable Bwindi Impenetrable National Park gorilla habituation experience with chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park. Starting and ending at Entebbe International Airport, the journey takes you through Uganda’s scenic countryside to Rushaga in southern Bwindi before continuing north through the Ishasha region towards Kibale.

Your main experience is the gorilla habituation activity in Rushaga, where you join researchers, trackers and park staff to observe a gorilla family that is being accustomed to human presence. Unlike standard gorilla trekking, which allows one hour with a habituated family, the habituation experience allows up to four hours with the gorillas, subject to park regulations and the family’s location.

The safari continues to Kibale Forest for chimpanzee trekking, with an optional guided nature walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. Choose Gorilla Leisure Lodge for mid-range accommodation or Gorilla Safari Lodge for a luxury stay in the Rushaga area. In Kibale, accommodation options include Turaco Treetops for mid-range comfort or Chimpundu Lodge for a luxury experience.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1

Entebbe Pickup and Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your driver-guide meets you at Entebbe International Airport or your hotel in the Entebbe area. After a short briefing, begin the journey south-west towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, passing through Uganda’s countryside and several busy trading centres along the way.

Stop at the Equator for photographs and refreshments before continuing through the Ankole region towards Kabale and the highlands of south-western Uganda. Enjoy lunch en route and watch the landscape change into rolling hills, cultivated slopes and forested mountains. Arrive in the Rushaga area in the evening, settle into your lodge and prepare for the following day’s gorilla habituation experience. Learn more about the park through these facts about Bwindi National Park.

  • Approximately 9 to 10 hours’ drive, depending on stops and road conditions
  • Mid-Range: Gorilla Leisure Lodge | Luxury: Gorilla Safari Lodge
  • Lunch and dinner

Day 2

Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga Sector

Rise early for breakfast before heading to the Rushaga park headquarters for a briefing with Uganda Wildlife Authority staff. You will learn about gorilla behaviour, forest etiquette, conservation and the rules for spending time near a gorilla family undergoing habituation. Researchers, trackers and experienced guides lead the activity into the forest.

The gorilla habituation experience in Rushaga offers the opportunity to spend up to four hours observing the gorillas, subject to park regulations and the circumstances of the encounter. You may watch the family feeding, moving through the vegetation, grooming one another and interacting naturally. The walk can be physically demanding because the forest terrain is steep, muddy and uneven, so suitable hiking boots and a reasonable level of fitness are important.

After the experience, return to the lodge for a late lunch and time to rest. Enjoy dinner and reflect on an exceptional day with one of the world’s most remarkable primates.

  • Allow most of the day for the habituation activity; walking time varies
  • Mid-Range: Gorilla Leisure Lodge | Luxury: Gorilla Safari Lodge
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3

Bwindi to Kibale Forest National Park via Ishasha

After breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin the journey from Bwindi towards Kibale Forest National Park. The route passes through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, a landscape known for open savannah, fig trees and opportunities to spot wildlife along the way.

Depending on the route, timing and wildlife conditions, you may have an opportunity to look for elephants, antelopes, buffaloes and other animals. The famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha are not guaranteed, and a dedicated game drive would need to be arranged if you want more time for wildlife viewing. Continue north through western Uganda, enjoying views of rural communities and green countryside before reaching the Kibale area.

Arrive at your lodge near Kibale Forest in the late afternoon or evening. Have dinner and rest ahead of your chimpanzee trekking activity the next morning. You can also explore our Uganda gorilla and chimpanzee safari options for more primate adventures.

  • Approximately 6 to 8 hours’ drive or longer, depending on the route and stops
  • Mid-Range: Turaco Treetops | Luxury: Chimpundu Lodge
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4

Chimpanzee Trekking and Optional Bigodi Nature Walk

Enjoy an early breakfast before heading to the Kibale Forest chimpanzee trekking briefing point. Meet your ranger-guide, learn about forest etiquette and set out to look for a community of wild chimpanzees. Kibale is one of Uganda’s best-known primate destinations, with forest trails that pass through rich vegetation and habitat shared by numerous bird and monkey species. Discover more in our Kibale Forest chimpanzee safari guide.

Once the chimpanzees are located, you will have an opportunity to observe their behaviour in the forest, including feeding, calling, climbing and interacting with other members of the community. The duration of the walk varies according to where the chimpanzees are found. Return to the lodge after trekking for lunch and some time to relax.

In the afternoon, you may choose an optional guided walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, known for its birdlife, monkeys and community conservation initiatives. This additional activity can be arranged at an extra cost. Return to your lodge for dinner and your final night near Kibale Forest.

  • Morning chimpanzee trek; optional afternoon Bigodi walk
  • Mid-Range: Turaco Treetops | Luxury: Chimpundu Lodge
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5

Return Drive to Entebbe

After breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin the return journey to Entebbe. Travel through the countryside of western and central Uganda, passing rural settlements, cultivated landscapes and roadside markets. Your driver-guide will arrange suitable stops along the way for refreshments and lunch, depending on your schedule.

Arrive in Entebbe and transfer to Entebbe International Airport for your onward flight. The journey is long, and travel time can vary with traffic and road conditions. We recommend booking a late departure flight or arranging an additional overnight stay if your international flight leaves early in the evening.

  • Approximately 5 to 7 hours or longer, depending on the route, stops and traffic
  • No accommodation unless an extra night is requested
  • Breakfast and lunch

FAQs for 5-Day Uganda Gorilla Habituation & Chimp Trekking Safari

Planning to experience gorilla habituation in Bwindi and chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest? These are the questions travellers ask most often, answered honestly so you can plan your trip and book with confidence.

What is included in the 5-Day Uganda Gorilla Habituation & Chimp Trekking Safari?

The package includes a gorilla habituation experience permit for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a chimpanzee trekking permit for Kibale Forest National Park, private transport in a 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced driver-guide, four nights of accommodation, meals as listed in your itinerary, bottled drinking water, fuel, and relevant ranger-guide fees. International flights, visas, travel insurance, tips, and personal expenses are not included. Your final quotation confirms the exact inclusions for your selected accommodation category.

How does the 5-day gorilla habituation and chimpanzee trekking itinerary work?

Day one begins with pickup from Entebbe International Airport and a drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. On day two, you participate in the gorilla habituation experience in the Rushaga sector, spending extended time with a gorilla group undergoing habituation under the guidance of researchers and ranger-guides. Day three involves travelling north towards Kibale Forest National Park. On day four, you participate in chimpanzee trekking, with an optional Bigodi Wetland nature walk depending on your schedule. Day five is reserved for the return drive to Entebbe for your onward journey or hotel transfer.

How long is the drive from Entebbe to Bwindi and Kibale Forest?

The road journey from Entebbe to Bwindi generally takes around eight to ten hours, depending on traffic, road conditions, and your accommodation location. Travelling from the Bwindi area to Kibale Forest National Park can take several hours, with the exact duration depending on your route and stops. The return drive from Kibale to Entebbe also requires a substantial part of the day. Your driver-guide plans suitable stops for meals, photographs, and stretching your legs. Domestic flights may be considered for selected sections as a customised option.

How do I get gorilla habituation and chimpanzee trekking permits?

Both permits should be secured before your safari because availability is limited and depends on your travel dates. The gorilla habituation permit allows you to participate in a guided habituation experience in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi, where visitors can spend up to four hours with a gorilla group undergoing habituation. The chimpanzee trekking permit allows you to track chimpanzees in Kibale Forest National Park. We check availability and arrange the permits as part of your booking. Confirming your dates early also helps coordinate accommodation and transport.

How fit do I need to be for gorilla habituation and chimpanzee trekking?

Reasonable fitness is recommended for both activities because the forests have uneven ground, steep slopes, thick vegetation, and potentially muddy trails. Gorilla habituation can involve several hours of walking while following trackers through Bwindi’s forest. Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale may also require walking at different speeds as guides follow the chimpanzees. Regular walking, stair climbing, and wearing your hiking boots before travelling can help you prepare. Let us know about mobility concerns in advance so we can discuss suitable arrangements.

How long will I spend with the gorillas and chimpanzees?

During Uganda’s gorilla habituation experience, visitors may spend up to four hours with a gorilla group undergoing habituation, subject to park regulations and ranger instructions. This differs from standard gorilla trekking, which allows one hour with a habituated gorilla family. During chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, the permitted observation time is generally one hour after the chimpanzees are located. The time spent searching for either primate group varies, so the overall duration and physical demands can differ from one activity day to another.

Is there a minimum age for gorilla habituation and chimpanzee trekking?

Yes. Visitors must generally be at least 15 years old to participate in Uganda’s gorilla habituation experience. The minimum age for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is generally 12 years. These requirements mean that younger children may not be eligible to join both activities on this itinerary. If you are travelling as a family, tell us the ages of everyone in your group before booking so we can check eligibility and discuss alternative activities where necessary.

When is the best time for this safari?

The drier months, usually June to September and December to February, are popular because forest trails are often firmer and trekking conditions can be more comfortable. However, Bwindi and Kibale are rainforest environments, so rain can fall at any time of year. The wetter months can bring muddy trails but also lush scenery and excellent opportunities for photography. Gorilla habituation and chimpanzee trekking depend on permit availability and park conditions throughout the year. Book early if you have fixed travel dates, particularly during busy holiday periods.

What should I pack for gorilla habituation and chimpanzee trekking?

Pack waterproof hiking boots with good grip, long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, gardening or hiking gloves, a lightweight rain jacket, a warm layer, a hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a small daypack. A reusable water bottle, trekking pole, camera with spare batteries, personal medication, and snacks are also useful. Bring a face mask for the gorilla encounters and follow the instructions provided by your ranger-guides. Gaiters can help keep mud and insects away from your legs. Keep essential trekking items accessible for each activity day.

Can I hire a porter during the gorilla habituation and chimpanzee treks?

Yes. Hiring a porter can make your forest activities more comfortable, even if you are reasonably fit. Porters can carry your daypack, offer a steadying hand on difficult slopes, and help you manage muddy or slippery sections. Their work also provides income to people living near the national parks. Porter services are generally arranged separately unless explicitly included in your safari quotation. Additional tips are optional and can be given directly to your porter.

What rules should I follow near gorillas and chimpanzees?

Follow your ranger-guides’ instructions throughout both activities. Near gorillas and chimpanzees, maintain the distance specified by park authorities, speak quietly, avoid flash photography, and never touch or feed the animals. Do not make sudden movements or attempt to attract their attention. Gorillas and chimpanzees are vulnerable to human diseases, so visitors must follow the health and hygiene rules provided during each briefing, including mask requirements where applicable. Stay on permitted routes and carry out all litter to protect the forest environment.

What happens if I feel sick before either primate activity?

Tell your driver-guide and park staff if you develop cold or flu symptoms, diarrhoea, or another potentially contagious illness before trekking. Mountain gorillas and chimpanzees are susceptible to human diseases, and park authorities may prevent visitors who are unwell from joining an activity. Any refund or rescheduling will depend on the applicable permit conditions and Uganda Wildlife Authority policy. We recommend suitable travel insurance that covers medical issues and trip interruptions. Follow ranger instructions about face masks and other health precautions during your encounters.

Am I guaranteed to see gorillas and chimpanzees?

Both Bwindi and Kibale offer good opportunities to observe wild primates, but sightings cannot be guaranteed absolutely. Gorilla trackers and ranger-guides help locate the habituating gorilla group, while chimpanzee guides follow signs and movements in the forest. The duration and difficulty of each activity depend on where the animals have moved and the prevailing conditions. Our team coordinates the itinerary and permits to give you the best practical chance of completing both activities while respecting wildlife welfare and park regulations.

Can I fly instead of driving between Entebbe and the national parks?

Domestic flights may be arranged as a customised option for selected sections of the journey, depending on available routes and schedules. Flying can reduce some road transfers, but suitable airstrips and onward road transfers must be considered when planning the itinerary. Flights are subject to weather, operational conditions, and baggage restrictions. Confirm your international arrival and departure times with us before booking so that domestic flights, accommodation, and ground transfers can be coordinated appropriately.

What accommodation options are available for this safari?

You can choose from budget, mid-range, and luxury accommodation, depending on your comfort preferences and budget. Near Bwindi’s Rushaga sector, options may include budget guesthouses or comfortable lodges such as Gorilla Leisure Lodge, subject to availability. Around Kibale Forest, accommodation options may include Turaco Treetops or Chimpundu Lodge, depending on your selected category and availability. We confirm the selected lodges in your final quotation before you pay, taking account of the itinerary and the location of each activity.

Can I customise the 5-day itinerary, and how do I book?

Yes. You can tailor the safari to your travel dates, preferred accommodation category, and transport arrangements, subject to permit and flight availability. The package can be organised as a private experience with your own driver-guide and vehicle for ground transfers. Send us your preferred dates, number of travellers, and accommodation preference so we can check the gorilla habituation and chimpanzee trekking permits and prepare a detailed quotation. Once you approve the itinerary and payment terms, we can proceed with the required reservations and coordinate the trip arrangements.
