Return to the lodge for breakfast or a late morning rest before heading out for the Kazinga Channel boat cruise in the afternoon. From the water, watch elephants, buffaloes and other animals gathering along the banks. Hippos are common in the channel, while numerous waterbirds add to the experience. Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, enter the forest and follow the trails through dense vegetation in search of the gorillas.
The trek may take several hours, depending on where the gorillas have moved and the terrain. Once you find the family, you can spend one hour observing their behaviour and taking photographs while maintaining the required distance. A porter can help carry your daypack and provide assistance on steep or slippery sections.
Return to your lodge for lunch and some rest. Later, you may arrange an optional Batwa cultural experience to learn about traditional forest knowledge, music and community history. Day 6
Return to Entebbe or Kigali
Enjoy breakfast overlooking Lake Bunyonyi before beginning your return journey. Travellers departing through Entebbe travel north and east through Uganda’s countryside, with stops for refreshments and lunch along the way. Since this is a long road transfer, an evening or late-night flight is recommended.
If you are departing through Kigali, travel towards Kisoro and cross into Rwanda through the Cyanika border, subject to border procedures and your travel documents. The drive to Kigali is generally shorter than the journey to Entebbe, making it a convenient option for travellers with suitable international flight connections.
Your driver-guide will drop you at the agreed airport or hotel. If your flight schedule does not allow enough time for the road transfer, an additional overnight stay or a revised departure arrangement can be discussed before booking.
- Allow approximately 9 to 11 hours to Entebbe or 4 to 6 hours to Kigali, depending on conditions and border procedures
- No accommodation unless an additional night is requested
- Breakfast and lunch

FAQs for 6-Day Uganda Gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi Safari
Planning to trek mountain gorillas and relax on Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda? These are the questions travellers ask most often, answered honestly so you can plan your trip and book with confidence.
What is included in the 6-Day Uganda Gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi Safari?
The package includes a mountain gorilla trekking permit for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, airport transfers, and private transport in a 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced driver-guide. It also covers five nights of accommodation, meals as listed in your itinerary, bottled drinking water, fuel, and porter service on the gorilla trekking day. Lake Bunyonyi activities such as a canoe ride are arranged as outlined in your itinerary. International flights, visas, travel insurance, tips, and personal expenses are not included. Your final quotation confirms the exact inclusions for your selected accommodation category.
How does the 6-day gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi itinerary work?
Day one begins with a drive from Entebbe towards the Bwindi area, with scenic stops along the way. Day two is dedicated to mountain gorilla trekking, including a ranger briefing and one hour with a habituated gorilla family. On day three, you transfer to Lake Bunyonyi, where days four and five are set aside for canoeing, island visits, village walks, and relaxing by the water. On day six, you drive back to Entebbe or Kampala for your onward journey or hotel transfer.
How long is the drive from Entebbe to Bwindi and Lake Bunyonyi?
The road journey from Entebbe to the Bwindi and Lake Bunyonyi region generally takes around eight to ten hours or longer, depending on traffic, road conditions, and the trekking sector where you are staying. Your driver-guide plans comfortable stops for meals, photographs, and stretching your legs. The transfer between Bwindi and Lake Bunyonyi is much shorter, usually a few hours depending on the sector. If you prefer to save time, a domestic flight to Kisoro may be possible as a customised option.
How do I get a gorilla trekking permit?
Your gorilla permit should be secured before your safari because trekking spaces are limited and availability depends on your travel dates. The permit allows you to track one habituated mountain gorilla family in Bwindi. We check availability and arrange the permit as part of your booking. Since the trekking sector affects where you stay and how far you travel each day, confirming your permit early helps us coordinate your accommodation, transfers, and the time you spend at Lake Bunyonyi.
How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking and the Lake Bunyonyi activities?
Moderate fitness is helpful, although the difficulty depends on the terrain, weather, and location of the gorillas. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi can take one to six hours or longer, depending on where the family has moved, and trails can be steep or muddy. Activities at Lake Bunyonyi, such as canoe rides and gentle village walks, are much more relaxed. Regular walking, stair climbing, and wearing your hiking boots before travelling can help you prepare. Let us know about mobility concerns in advance so we can discuss suitable arrangements.
How long will I spend with the mountain gorillas?
Once your ranger-guides locate the mountain gorillas, you are allowed one hour with the family. You can observe their behaviour, watch juveniles play, and take photographs without flash while following the ranger’s instructions. The encounter takes place under park regulations designed to protect the animals and their habitat. The time spent searching for the group varies, so the overall trekking duration can differ from one day to another. The remaining days of the safari are more relaxed, giving you time to recover and enjoy Lake Bunyonyi.
Is there a minimum age for gorilla trekking?
Yes. Visitors must generally be at least 15 years old to participate in mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda. This means that younger children may not be eligible to join the gorilla trek on this itinerary. Many Lake Bunyonyi activities, such as canoe rides and relaxing by the lake, are suitable for a wider range of ages. If you are travelling as a family, tell us the ages of everyone in your group before booking so we can check eligibility and discuss alternative activities where necessary.
When is the best time for this gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi safari?
The drier months, usually June to September and December to February, are popular because trails are often firmer and trekking conditions can be more comfortable. However, Bwindi is a rainforest environment, so rain can fall at any time of year. The wetter months can bring muddy trails but also lush scenery and good opportunities for photography around Lake Bunyonyi. Gorilla trekking operates throughout the year, subject to park conditions and permit availability. Book early if you have fixed travel dates, particularly during busy holiday periods.
What should I pack for gorilla trekking and Lake Bunyonyi?
Pack waterproof hiking boots with good grip, long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, gardening or hiking gloves, a lightweight rain jacket, a warm layer for cool evenings, a hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a small daypack. A reusable water bottle, camera with spare batteries, personal medication, and a face mask for the gorilla encounter are also useful. Gaiters can help keep mud and insects away from your legs. Bring comfortable casual clothing and swimwear for your time at Lake Bunyonyi, and keep essential trekking items accessible on gorilla day.
Can I hire a porter during gorilla trekking in Bwindi?
Yes. Hiring a porter is a practical way to make your gorilla trek more comfortable, even if you are reasonably fit. Porters can carry your daypack, offer a steadying hand on difficult slopes, and help you manage muddy or slippery sections. Their work also provides income to people living near the national park. Porter service is included in this safari package as outlined in the itinerary, but confirm the precise arrangement in your quotation. Additional tips are optional and can be given directly to your porter.
What rules should I follow near gorillas?
Follow your ranger’s instructions throughout the trek. Near mountain gorillas, maintain the distance specified by park authorities, speak quietly, avoid flash photography, and never touch or feed the animals. Do not eat, drink, or smoke close to the gorillas, and avoid sudden movements if one approaches. Gorillas are vulnerable to human diseases, so visitors must follow the health, hygiene, and wildlife protection rules provided during the briefing. Please also respect local communities and the environment when visiting villages and islands around Lake Bunyonyi.
What happens if I feel sick before gorilla trekking?
Tell your driver-guide and park staff if you develop a cold, flu symptoms, diarrhoea, or another potentially contagious illness before trekking. Mountain gorillas are susceptible to human diseases, and park authorities may prevent visitors who are unwell from joining the activity. Any refund or rescheduling will depend on the applicable permit conditions and Uganda Wildlife Authority policy. We recommend suitable travel insurance that covers medical issues and trip interruptions. Follow the ranger’s instructions about face masks and other health precautions during your gorilla encounter.
Am I guaranteed to see mountain gorillas?
The trek offers a good opportunity to observe a habituated gorilla family in its natural habitat, but sightings cannot be guaranteed absolutely because these are wild animals. Trackers and ranger-guides help locate the group and guide visitors safely through the forest. The duration and difficulty of the trek depend on where the animals have moved and the prevailing conditions. Our team coordinates the itinerary and permit to give you the best practical chance of a successful trek, while respecting wildlife welfare and park regulations.
Can I fly into Kisoro instead of driving from Entebbe?
Yes, this can be arranged as a customised option. A domestic flight between Entebbe and Kisoro reduces the long road transfer and can give you more time at Lake Bunyonyi. After landing, you travel by private 4×4 vehicle to your lodge. Flights are subject to schedules, weather, and operational conditions, and baggage restrictions may apply. Confirm your international arrival and departure times with us before booking so that any domestic flights and transfers can be arranged appropriately.
What accommodation options are available for this safari?
You can choose from budget, mid-range, and luxury accommodation, depending on your comfort preferences and budget. Near Bwindi, options may include Gorilla Valley Lodge, Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, or Gorilla Leisure Lodge, depending on availability and the trekking sector. At Lake Bunyonyi, you can stay in lakeside lodges and resorts that range from simple, comfortable stays to more upscale options with views over the islands. We confirm the selected lodges in your final quotation before you pay.
Can I customise the 6-day itinerary, and how do I book?
Yes. You can tailor the safari to your travel dates, preferred accommodation category, and transport arrangements, subject to permit and flight availability. The package is organised as a private experience with your own driver-guide and vehicle for ground transfers. Send us your preferred dates, number of travellers, and accommodation preference so we can check the gorilla permit and prepare a detailed quotation. Once you approve the itinerary and payment terms, we can proceed with the required reservations and coordinate the trip arrangements.
