Safari overview
Meet mountain gorillas in two different forests, then climb a Virunga volcano to the point where three countries meet.
This private five-day journey takes you from Entebbe to the far south-west corner of Uganda, where the forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park shelter some of the last mountain gorillas on Earth. You travel by 4×4 safari vehicle with your own driver-guide, so you set the pace, stop for photographs and keep the group as small as you like.
You track gorillas twice: first in the dense, misty rainforest of Bwindi, then on the bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga volcanoes in Mgahinga. Each time, a park ranger leads you to a habituated family and you spend one hour in their company. After the two treks, a full day on Mount Sabinyo rewards you with sweeping views and a chance to stand where Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo meet.
Choose the travel style that suits you. We can arrange this itinerary on a budget, mid-range or luxury basis, and every version is fully private.

Detailed itinerary
Day 1
Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your driver-guide meets you at Entebbe International Airport after you land, or at your hotel in Kampala, and briefs you on the days ahead. You then head south-west on the road to Kigezi, with a stop at the Equator for photographs and a coffee.
Continue through Masaka and Mbarara, stopping for lunch along the way. In the afternoon the road climbs into the green, terraced hills around Kabale, and you reach your lodge in the southern Rushaga area of Bwindi in the evening for dinner and an early night.
- 9 to 10 hours’ drive
- Budget: Gorilla Valley Lodge | Mid-Range: Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge | Luxury: Gorilla Leisure Lodge
- Lunch and dinner
Day 2
Bwindi gorilla trekking and drive to Kisoro
After an early breakfast, you meet your ranger-guide at the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla etiquette and are assigned a gorilla family. Trackers have already set out at first light to locate the group.
The trek can last from one to six hours depending on where the gorillas spent the night. The terrain is steep and often wet, so a porter, who is included, can carry your daypack and help you on the hardest slopes. When you find the family, you spend one hour observing and photographing them in their natural habitat.
Return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest. In the late afternoon, drive south to the border town of Kisoro, with views of Lake Mutanda and the Virunga volcanoes of Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabinyo rising ahead. You reach your lodge near Mgahinga in the evening for dinner.
- 1 to 6 hours’ trek, then 2 to 3 hours’ drive
- Budget: Ikaze Cottages | Mid-Range: Ichumbi Hotel | Luxury: Mount Gahinga Lodge
- Breakfast, Lunch and dinner
Day 3
Mgahinga gorilla trekking
After breakfast, meet your ranger-guide at the Mgahinga park gate for a briefing and set out to find the Nyakagezi gorilla family, which roams the lower slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. You spend one hour with the gorillas, surrounded by bamboo and giant lobelia.
The trek is usually shorter than in Bwindi, so you are often back at the lodge by early afternoon. Spend the rest of the day resting, or take an optional visit to the Batwa community of Mgahinga for a cultural walk (extra cost). Over dinner, your driver-guide and park ranger brief you on tomorrow’s Sabinyo hike.
- 2 to 4 hours’ trek
- Budget: Ikaze Cottages | Mid-Range: Ichumbi Hotel | Luxury: Mount Gahinga Lodge
- Breakfast, Lunch and dinner
Day 4
Mount Sabinyo hike
Start early with a packed breakfast and meet your ranger at the Mgahinga park gate. The Sabinyo trail climbs through bamboo and montane forest, then along a narrow ridge with steep drops on either side. Ladders and steps help you over the roughest sections, and the views across the Virunga range are some of the best in East Africa.
At the highest point you reach the spot where Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo meet. After time for photographs and a picnic lunch, you descend the same way. This is a demanding hike that needs a good level of fitness, but you walk at your own pace and rangers stay with you throughout.
Return to your lodge in the late afternoon for a hot shower and dinner.
- 6 to 8 hours’ hike
- Budget: Ikaze Cottages | Mid-Range: Ichumbi Hotel | Luxury: Mount Gahinga Lodge
- Breakfast, Lunch and dinner
Day 5
Return to Entebbe or Kigali
After a relaxed breakfast, your driver-guide takes you back to the airport of your choice. For Kigali, the drive crosses the Cyanika border into Rwanda and takes about three to four hours. For Entebbe, you retrace the scenic route through Kabale, Mbarara and Masaka, with stops for lunch and the Equator.
We drop you at your hotel or the airport for your onward flight. If you are heading to Entebbe, the drive is long, so we recommend a late-night flight, or we can add a night in Entebbe on request.
- 3 to 4 hours’ drive to Kigali, or 9 to 10 hours’ drive to Entebbe
- No Accommodation, Unless Requested
- Breakfast & Lunch

FAQs for 5-Day Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorillas with Sabinyo Hike
Planning to trek mountain gorillas in two national parks and hike Mount Sabinyo in Uganda? These are the questions travellers ask most often, answered honestly so you can plan your trip and book with confidence.
What is included in the 5-Day Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorillas with Sabinyo Hike Safari?
The package includes a mountain gorilla trekking permit for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a gorilla trekking permit for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, a Mount Sabinyo hiking permit, and private transport in a 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced driver-guide. It also covers four nights of accommodation, meals as listed in your itinerary, bottled drinking water, fuel, ranger-guide fees, and porter service on trekking days. International flights, visas, travel insurance, tips, and personal expenses are not included. Your final quotation confirms the exact inclusions for your selected accommodation category.
How does the 5-day Bwindi, Mgahinga and Sabinyo itinerary work?
Day one begins with a drive from Entebbe to the Bwindi area, with scenic stops along the way. On day two, you trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi, including a ranger briefing and one hour with a habituated family, then transfer towards Kisoro. Day three is for gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Day four is dedicated to the Mount Sabinyo hike, and on day five you travel back to Entebbe or Kampala for your onward journey or hotel transfer.
How long is the drive from Entebbe to Bwindi and Kisoro?
The road journey from Entebbe to the Bwindi and Kisoro region generally takes around eight to ten hours or longer, depending on traffic, road conditions, and the trekking sector where you are staying. Your driver-guide plans comfortable stops for meals, photographs, and stretching your legs. If you prefer to save time, a domestic flight between Entebbe and Kisoro may be possible as a customised option. Flight schedules, baggage allowances, and transfer arrangements should be confirmed before departure.
How do I get gorilla trekking and Sabinyo hiking permits?
All permits should be secured before your safari because gorilla trekking spaces are limited and availability depends on your travel dates. One gorilla permit allows you to track a habituated mountain gorilla family in Bwindi, and a second permit covers gorilla trekking in Mgahinga. The Sabinyo hike is arranged separately through the park. We check availability and arrange all permits as part of your booking. Because the activities take place on consecutive days, confirming permits early helps us coordinate your accommodation and transfers.
How fit do I need to be for the gorilla treks and Sabinyo hike?
Good fitness is recommended, mainly because of the Mount Sabinyo hike. The hike is a long and demanding day on steep, sometimes muddy trails with ladders and narrow ridges, so it suits confident walkers. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi and Mgahinga can take one to six hours or longer, depending on where the family has moved. Regular walking, stair climbing, and wearing your hiking boots before travelling can help you prepare. Let us know about mobility concerns in advance so we can discuss suitable arrangements.
How long will I spend with the mountain gorillas, and how long is the Sabinyo hike?
Once your ranger-guides locate a gorilla family, you are allowed one hour with them in either park. You can observe their behaviour, watch juveniles play, and take photographs without flash while following the ranger’s instructions. The Mount Sabinyo hike is a full-day activity that can take around eight hours or more, depending on your pace and the weather. The time spent searching for gorillas varies, so the overall trekking duration can differ from one day to another.
Is there a minimum age for gorilla trekking and the Sabinyo hike?
Yes. Visitors must generally be at least 15 years old to participate in mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda. The Mount Sabinyo hike is physically demanding, and park authorities may apply their own age and fitness requirements. These rules mean that younger children may not be eligible to join all activities on this itinerary. If you are travelling as a family, tell us the ages of everyone in your group before booking so we can check eligibility and discuss alternative activities where necessary.
When is the best time for this safari?
The drier months, usually June to September and December to February, are popular because trails are often firmer and trekking and hiking conditions can be more comfortable. However, Bwindi and Mgahinga are rainforest and mountain environments, so rain can fall at any time of year. The wetter months can bring muddy trails but also lush scenery and good opportunities for photography. Gorilla trekking and the Sabinyo hike operate throughout the year, subject to park conditions and permit availability. Book early if you have fixed travel dates, particularly during busy holiday periods.
What should I pack for the Bwindi, Mgahinga and Sabinyo activities?
Pack waterproof hiking boots with good grip, long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, gardening or hiking gloves, a lightweight rain jacket, a warm layer for higher altitudes, a hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a small daypack. A reusable water bottle, trekking pole, camera with spare batteries, personal medication, snacks for the hike, and a face mask for the gorilla encounters are also useful. Gaiters can help keep mud and insects away from your legs. Keep essential trekking items accessible for each activity day.
Can I hire a porter during gorilla trekking and the Sabinyo hike?
Yes. Hiring a porter is a practical way to make your treks more comfortable, even if you are reasonably fit. Porters can carry your daypack, offer a steadying hand on difficult slopes, and help you manage muddy or slippery sections. Their work also provides income to people living near the national parks. Porter service is included in this safari package as outlined in the itinerary, but confirm the precise arrangement in your quotation. Additional tips are optional and can be given directly to your porter.
What rules should I follow near gorillas?
Follow your ranger’s instructions throughout every trek and hike. Near mountain gorillas, maintain the distance specified by park authorities, speak quietly, avoid flash photography, and never touch or feed the animals. Do not eat, drink, or smoke close to the gorillas, and avoid sudden movements if one approaches. On the Sabinyo hike, stay on the marked trail and carry out all litter. Gorillas are vulnerable to human diseases, so visitors must follow the health, hygiene, and wildlife protection rules provided during each briefing.
What happens if I feel sick before gorilla trekking?
Tell your driver-guide and park staff if you develop a cold, flu symptoms, diarrhoea, or another potentially contagious illness before trekking. Mountain gorillas are susceptible to human diseases, and park authorities may prevent visitors who are unwell from joining the activity. Any refund or rescheduling will depend on the applicable permit conditions and Uganda Wildlife Authority policy. We recommend suitable travel insurance that covers medical issues and trip interruptions. Follow the ranger’s instructions about face masks and other health precautions during your gorilla encounters.
Am I guaranteed to see mountain gorillas?
Both parks offer good opportunities to observe habituated gorilla families in their natural habitat, but sightings cannot be guaranteed absolutely because these are wild animals. Trackers and ranger-guides help locate the groups and guide visitors safely through the forest. The duration and difficulty of each trek depend on where the animals have moved and the prevailing conditions. Our team coordinates the itinerary and permits to give you the best practical chance of completing every activity, while respecting wildlife welfare and park regulations.
Can I fly into Kisoro instead of driving from Entebbe?
Yes, this can be arranged as a customised option. A domestic flight between Entebbe and Kisoro reduces long road transfers and can free up more time for trekking and rest. After landing, you travel by private 4×4 vehicle to your lodge. Flights are subject to schedules, weather, and operational conditions, and baggage restrictions may apply. Confirm your international arrival and departure times with us before booking so that any domestic flights and transfers can be arranged appropriately.
What accommodation options are available for this safari?
You can choose from budget, mid-range, and luxury accommodation, depending on your comfort preferences and budget. Near Mgahinga, options may include Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp for a budget stay, Mutanda Lake Resort for a mid-range experience, or Mount Gahinga Lodge for a luxury option. Near Bwindi, options may include Gorilla Valley Lodge, Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, or Gorilla Leisure Lodge, depending on availability and the trekking sector. We confirm the selected lodges in your final quotation before you pay.
Can I customise the 5-day itinerary, and how do I book?
Yes. You can tailor the safari to your travel dates, preferred accommodation category, and transport arrangements, subject to permit and flight availability. The package is organised as a private experience with your own driver-guide and vehicle for ground transfers. Send us your preferred dates, number of travellers, and accommodation preference so we can check the gorilla and Sabinyo permits and prepare a detailed quotation. Once you approve the itinerary and payment terms, we can proceed with the required reservations and coordinate the trip arrangements.
