Detailed itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

Your driver-guide meets you at your Nairobi hotel or the airport early in the morning. After a short briefing, begin the journey south towards Amboseli National Park, passing through Kenya’s countryside and Maasai grazing lands as the landscape opens into wide, dry plains.

Enjoy lunch at your lodge, then settle in and rest. In the late afternoon, set out on your first game drive, when the light is soft and the elephants, buffaloes and plains game are most active. If the skies are clear, you may catch your first views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

  • Approximately 4 to 5 hours’ drive, plus an afternoon game drive
  • Budget: Kibo Safari Camp | Mid-Range: Amboseli Sopa Lodge | Luxury: Tortilis Camp
  • Lunch and dinner

Day 2

Full-Day Game Viewing in Amboseli

Rise early for a sunrise game drive, when the air is cool and the mountain is often at its clearest. Amboseli is famous for its elephants, and you may watch family herds feeding in the swamps and crossing the plains, along with buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and a wide variety of birds. With luck you may also see lions or cheetahs hunting in the open grassland.

Return to the lodge for breakfast and a rest. After lunch, head out again for an afternoon game drive, with a stop at Observation Hill for views across the swamps and plains towards Kilimanjaro. You may also add an optional visit to a nearby Maasai community to learn about their traditions and way of life; this can be arranged at an extra cost.

Return to your lodge for dinner and a second night in Amboseli.

  • Morning and afternoon game drives; optional Maasai visit
  • Budget: Kibo Safari Camp | Mid-Range: Amboseli Sopa Lodge | Luxury: Tortilis Camp
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3

Morning Game Drive and Return to Nairobi

Enjoy an early morning game drive for a final chance to see Amboseli’s wildlife and, weather permitting, Kilimanjaro in the first light of day. Return to the lodge for breakfast and check out.

Begin the journey back to Nairobi, with a stop for lunch along the way. Your driver-guide drops you at your hotel or the airport in the late afternoon, ready for your onward travel.

FAQs for 3-Day Amboseli Game Safari

Planning a short safari in Amboseli National Park? These are the questions travellers ask most often, answered honestly so you can plan your trip and book with confidence.

What is the net cost for the 3-Day Amboseli Game Safari?

The 3-Day Amboseli Game Safari starts from $1,020 per person sharing. The net cost is the final amount you pay after your accommodation level, travel dates, and group size are confirmed. The price covers private 4×4 safari transport with an experienced driver-guide, game drives, park entrance fees, meals and accommodation as listed in the itinerary, bottled drinking water, and government taxes. International flights, visas or travel authorisations, travel insurance, tips, drinks, souvenirs, and optional activities such as the Maasai cultural visit are not included. Travelling solo adds a single supplement, and peak-season dates cost more, so your final quotation confirms exactly what applies to you.

    Can this safari be customized?

Yes. The 3-day itinerary is a starting point, and we can adjust it to suit your plans. You can upgrade or change your lodge or camp, add extra nights in Amboseli, combine it with other Kenyan destinations such as Tsavo, the Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru, or the coast, or choose between a road transfer and a flight to Amboseli. We can also arrange private departures, family-friendly schedules, photography-focused game drives, and special occasions such as honeymoons. Tell us your dates, interests, and budget, and we will prepare a tailored quotation.

What is the minimum and maximum group size?

You can travel as a solo traveller, a couple, a family, or a group, as the safari runs as a private tour in your own vehicle. Each 4×4 safari vehicle seats up to five guests with a guaranteed window seat, which keeps game viewing and photography comfortable. Larger groups travel in several vehicles, each with its own driver-guide, so everyone enjoys the same experience. Please share your group size when you enquire so we can confirm the right vehicles and rooms.

How does the 3-day Amboseli itinerary work?

Day one begins with pick-up in Nairobi and the journey to Amboseli, where you check in, enjoy lunch, and head out on an afternoon game drive. Day two is a full day of game viewing across the park, with time at the swamps where elephants and other wildlife gather, and early morning light for views of Mount Kilimanjaro. On day three, you enjoy a final morning game drive before the return to Nairobi for your onward journey or flight.

How long is the drive between Nairobi and Amboseli National Park?

The road journey from Nairobi to Amboseli usually takes about four to five hours, depending on traffic, road conditions, and stops. Most of the route is on paved road, with a bumpier stretch near the park gate, and your driver-guide makes comfort stops along the way. If you would rather save time, we can arrange a scheduled flight to the Amboseli airstrip, which takes under an hour. Your driver-guide times each leg around your arrival and departure flights.

Am I guaranteed to see all the Big Five on this safari?

No operator can guarantee this, because the animals are wild and free to roam. Amboseli is best known for its large elephant herds, and sightings of buffalo, lions, and other plains game are good. Leopards are shy and seen only occasionally, and rhinos are rarely seen in Amboseli, so travellers who want to complete the Big Five usually combine this trip with another park such as the Maasai Mara or Lake Nakuru. Our driver-guides work closely with other guides to track animals, and time spent in the park gives you the best practical chance of a rewarding sighting.

What is the best time to visit Amboseli for wildlife and Mount Kilimanjaro views?

The dry months from June to October and from January to February are generally the best for game viewing, because animals gather around the swamps and waterholes. Mount Kilimanjaro is clearest in the early morning and late afternoon, and it is often hidden by cloud during the middle of the day, so no sighting can be promised. The wet seasons bring greener scenery and fewer visitors, though some roads can be muddy. The park can be dusty in the dry season, so bring a scarf or buff to keep dust out. If the view inspires you to climb the mountain one day, read our guide on which Kilimanjaro route to choose.

Is it possible to add a Maasai cultural visit or other activities?

Yes, the Maasai cultural visit is an optional extra and is not included in the starting price. It lets you meet community members, see traditional dances, and learn about village life, and it usually fits into a free afternoon. Other add-ons, such as extra game drives, a visit to a conservation project, or a night in a different park, can be arranged on request. Let us know what you would like and we will add it to your quotation.

What rules should I follow during game drives?

Follow your driver-guide’s instructions at all times. Stay seated in the vehicle, keep your voice low, and never get out of the vehicle unless your guide says it is safe. Do not feed or touch any animal, and do not litter. Vehicles must stay on designated tracks, and your guide keeps a respectful distance so the animals are not disturbed. Please also do not use drones, as they are restricted in Kenya’s parks and reserves.

Do I need a visa to travel to Kenya?

Entry requirements depend on your nationality, so check the current rules before you travel. Most visitors need to apply online for a Kenya electronic travel authorisation (eTA) before departure, while some nationalities are exempt. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months, and ask your doctor about recommended vaccinations, malaria prevention, and any yellow fever certificate requirements for your route. We can guide you through the process.

What accommodation is used on this safari?

You stay in a lodge or tented camp in or near Amboseli National Park, chosen to match your budget. Options range from comfortable mid-range camps to luxury lodges with views of the plains and, on clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro. Accommodation is subject to availability at the time of booking, and we may suggest comparable alternatives if your first choice is full. Your final quotation lists the confirmed lodges before you pay, so you always know where you will sleep.

What should I pack for an Amboseli safari?

Pack lightweight clothing in neutral colours such as beige, khaki, or olive, along with a warm layer for cool early mornings and evenings. Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable walking shoes, binoculars, and a camera with spare batteries and a dust cover. Use a soft bag rather than a hard suitcase, since space in the vehicle is limited. Kenya has banned single-use plastic bags, so do not pack them in your luggage, as officials may confiscate them at the airport.

Should I tip my driver-guide and camp staff?

Tips are not included in the safari price, but they are a customary way to thank the people who look after you. Many travellers tip their driver-guide at the end of the trip and leave a shared tip for lodge or camp staff. There is no fixed amount, so tip according to the service you receive and what feels comfortable.

What should I do about travel insurance and money?

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical care, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, and interruption. Carry some US dollars in recent, undamaged notes, and bring a card for lodge extras where accepted. Kenyan shillings are useful for small purchases such as souvenirs and tips, and mobile money is widely used locally.

How do I book this safari and what happens next?

Send us your preferred travel dates, number of travellers, and accommodation level. We first check lodge and vehicle availability, then prepare a detailed quotation with your lodges, inclusions, and total cost. Once you approve the itinerary and agree the payment terms, we confirm your lodge and transport reservations. Booking several months ahead is wise, especially for the dry seasons from June to October and January to February, and for holiday periods.
