Tour Overview
If you’re looking for a trip that combines gorilla trekking with a genuine mountain adventure, this 5-Day Bwindi & Mgahinga Gorillas with Sabinyo Hike is hard to beat. It takes you into two of Uganda’s most rewarding national parks — Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park — for two separate gorilla treks, then finishes with a climb up Mount Sabyinyo, the jagged volcano where Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo meet. The trip starts and ends in Kigali, Rwanda, and is built around comfortable mid-range lodges, so you’re not roughing it between hikes. It’s a good fit for travelers who want more than a single gorilla permit — people who want to see two different gorilla families in two different landscapes, and who don’t mind a proper leg-burning hike as the grand finale.

Travel Plan
Day 1: Pickup from Kigali & Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
Your guide picks you up from Kigali International Airport or your hotel in the city, and from there it’s a scenic drive southwest into Uganda. Expect rolling hills, patchwork farmland, and small trading towns along the way — the kind of drive that already gives you a feel for the region before you’ve even reached the forest. Once you arrive at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, you’ll check into your lodge, have a warm meal, and settle in for an early night ahead of next day’s trek.
- Accommodation: Bakiga Lodge or Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge (Mid-Range)
- Meal Plan: Half Board (Lunch & Dinner)
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi & Transfer to Kisoro Town
After breakfast, you’ll head to the park briefing point, where rangers walk you through the trekking rules and safety guidelines before you set off. From there, experienced trackers lead the way into the forest — and Bwindi doesn’t give up its gorillas easily. Depending on where the family has moved to that morning, the trek can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours, so it helps to come with a bit of patience and reasonably good fitness.
Once you find the group, you get a full hour with them — watching them feed, play, and go about their day just a few meters away. It’s the kind of encounter that tends to stay with people long after the trip ends. Afterward, you’ll transfer to Kisoro Town for the night.
Accommodation: Ichumbi Hotel (Mid-Range)
Meal Plan: Full Board (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga National Park & Return to Kisoro Town
This day takes you to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, a much smaller and quieter park tucked at the base of the Virunga volcanoes. Here, rangers guide you through bamboo forest and open highland vegetation in search of the Nyakagezi family — the only habituated gorilla group in the park. Because the terrain and vegetation are so different from Bwindi, this trek has a noticeably different feel, even though the reward — another hour with the gorillas — is just as special.
Once the visit wraps up, you’ll descend back to the trailhead and return to Kisoro Town, where the afternoon is yours to rest, wander through the local shops, or just relax at the hotel.
- Accommodation: Ichumbi Hotel (Mid-Range)
- Meal Plan: Full Board (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)
Day 4: Mount Sabyinyo Hike
- Accommodation: Ichumbi Hotel (Mid-Range)
- Meal Plan: Full Board (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)
Day 4: Drive Back to Kigali, Optional City Tour & Departure
On your last morning, you’ll have breakfast before setting off on the drive back to Kigali. If your flight schedule allows, there’s time to fit in an optional Kigali city tour — the Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, or a stroll through the city centre are all worth the detour. From there, your guide drops you at Kigali International Airport or your hotel, and your Bwindi and Mgahinga gorilla adventure comes to an end.
- Accommodation: None unless requested
- Meal Plan: Half Board (Breakfast & Lunch)
Answered FAQs
How fit do I need to be for the 5-Day Bwindi & Mgahinga Gorillas with Sabinyo Hike?
You don’t need to be an athlete, but reasonable fitness helps a lot. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi can take up to 6 hours on steep, sometimes muddy terrain, and the Mount Sabyinyo hike is genuinely strenuous, with ladder sections near the summit. If you walk or hike regularly, you’ll be fine. If not, a bit of cardio prep in the weeks before your trip is a smart idea.
Do I need two separate gorilla permits for this itinerary?
Yes. This trip includes two distinct gorilla treks — one in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and one in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park — so you’ll need a permit for each park. Permits are limited and often booked out months in advance, so it’s worth securing them early, especially during the June-to-September and December-to-February peak seasons.
Is the Mount Sabyinyo hike safe for beginners?
It’s manageable for beginners who are reasonably fit and prepared for a long day on the trail, but it isn’t an easy stroll. The route includes ladder climbs on exposed, rocky sections near the summit, so a good pair of hiking boots, trekking poles, and a steady pace matter more than raw athleticism. Guides are experienced with first-time hikers and will pace the climb accordingly.
What's the difference between gorilla trekking in Bwindi and Mgahinga?
Bwindi is dense, ancient rainforest, so the trek often winds through thick vegetation and can vary a lot in length depending on where the gorillas are that day. Mgahinga sits on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, with more open bamboo forest and highland terrain, giving a different — and for many travelers, equally memorable — experience. Doing both, as this itinerary allows, gives you a fuller picture of gorilla habitats in the region.
What should I pack for this trip?
Waterproof hiking boots, gardening gloves (for grabbing vegetation on the trek), a rain jacket, long trousers, and layered clothing are essentials, since weather in the forest and on the mountain can shift quickly. Add a daypack, water bottle, energy snacks, and a camera with a good zoom lens for gorilla photos. For the Sabyinyo hike specifically, trekking poles make a noticeable difference on the descent.
Can this itinerary be extended or combined with other parks?
Yes, definitely. Many travelers extend this trip with a few days in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park for golden monkey tracking, or combine it with a safari in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park before or after the gorilla and Sabyinyo days. Since the trip starts and ends in Kigali, it’s also easy to tack on time in the city itself.
